Vermont Woodturners Guild

Russ Fellows Woodturning Center

The Russ Fellows Woodturning Center was founded in honor of one of our founding members, Russ Fellows, with the generosity of his partner Bob Coates and many other contributors. The Center is a well-equipped shop with 5 lathes and a wide range of tools, equipment, and supplies to support a variety of turning techniques and activities. The Center is housed in Russ’s former workshop.

The Center offers Guild members the following activities and services:

  1. Hosting: The Center hosts the Guild’s monthly meetings and Sawdust Sessions from May through October.
  2. Workshops: A broad selection of one-day workshops on turning, finishing, and embellishing techniques.
  3. Short sessions: One-hour interactive demonstrations held prior to a meeting or Sawdust Session to cover specific skills and techniques such as sharpening, filling cracks and voids, drying methods to avoid splitting, etc.
  4. One-to-One Training: Members who want to refine a particular skill, or who are struggling with a specific technique, can contact the board about connecting them with another member who may be able to provide a one-hour individual training session at the Center prior to a meeting or Sawdust Session.
  5. Coring: For two hours prior to various meetings and Sawdust Sessions scheduled throughout the season, our Oneway coring system will be setup on one of the lathes, and someone trained in its use will be available to core pieces for members.
  6. Buffing: Our Beall Buffing System will be set up on one of the lathes for use during meetings and Sawdust sessions.
  7. Wood supply: The Center maintains a small “log yard” of common woods for use in demonstrations, workshops, and other club activities.
  8. Tool access: The Center maintains a wide variety of turning tools for members to use at the Center and experiment with during Sawdust Sessions.
  9. Preparation of blanks, and other bandsaw and chainsaw needs: If you have chunks of wood that you can’t process yourself, bring them to a meeting or Sawdust Session. There will always be someone there who is authorized to use the equipment and who will process them for you.
